Zodiac Starforce: By the Power of Astra

Zodiac Starforce Volume One by Kevin Panetta

I thought I was going to love this. The art looked gorgeous and the story seemed right up my alley. Unfortunately, it just fell a little flat for me. Whilst I was right and I enjoyed the art style the story didn't live up to my expectations.

It began just after the Zodiac Starforce had broken up, they were still friends but had disbanded after their last mission nearly killed them. Now a new threat has arisen and they have to reform to tackle it. Yes, I liked the fact that it was a different take on a superhero group but it just didn't work. I would've liked to have heard about their first mission instead, the one before this graphic novel.

Character-wise I don't feel like we got to know any of the characters on more than a surface level. For example, Lumberjanes has an extensive cast but each one has such individuality to them. I didn't get that from this graphic novel. If there were no panels I probably wouldn't have been able to differentiate who was speaking.

That being said, I did enjoy the story. It took a route I wasn't expecting and introduced a new member to the group. I do intend to continue with the series to see if it improves because, as I said I enjoyed the art style. I think there's potential here.
