Top 5 Wednesday: Freebie – Required Reading

What is Top 5 Wednesday?

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Sam of Thoughts on Tomes on YouTube. Here is the link for the Goodreads group where you can find the list of topics and such.

This weeks topic is: Freebie - Required Reading

1. Emma by Jane Austen

I loved my first foray into Austen's work. Emma was such a fun character to read about and one that transcends time. Every one knows a gossip, a matchmaker and someone with more than a few airs and graces. I can't wait to read more of her work for my next year and now, for pleasure.

3. Evelina by Frances Burney

This is possibly now one of my favourite classic novels and Evelina is one of my favourite characters ever. I got to write an essay on this novel and I loved exploring the themes and doing research surrounding this book and also Burney herself who had a very interesting life, though quite a sad one.

1. The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy

Hardy is a rather bleak fellow, well at least his books are but I really enjoyed reading Mayor of Casterbridge. I think I read it in something daft like a day. I want to read more of his work! Starting with Tess of the D'Urbervilles as recommended by one of my lovely friends.

4. The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

I've lost count how many times I've recommended this collection of short stories to people. It's absolutely phenomenal. Gothic fairytales? Yes please! I think the titular story is one of my favourites, as is Wolf Alice. Such an amazing book.

3. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Undoubtedly my favourite classic.
