Top 5 Wednesday: Favourite Teachers/Mentors

March 28, 2018

What is Top 5 Wednesday?

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly book meme hosted by Sam of Thoughts on Tomes on YouTube. Here is the link for the Goodreads group where you can find the list of topics and such.

This weeks topic is: Favourite Teachers/Mentors

4. Half-Blood by Jennifer L Armentrout

I marathoned this series a few years ago and absolutely devoured it. I love the relationship between Aiden and Alex and how it developed. It started out as him mentoring her. He helps her train, keeps her in check but cares about her so very much. Like most young/new adult academy books a romance blossoms between them. What I really appreciated was how much Aiden valued Alex, not just as a his love interest but as a warrior.

2. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab

Tieren is such a sneakily sassy character. I love him. He doesn't get an awful lot of page time in the series but when he does, my god. It counts. He consistently helps Rhy, Kell and eventually Lila out but never gives them a direct answer. He wants them to learn for themselves which I think makes him a fantastic mentor. That and he's quite the badass.

2. The Magician’s Guild by Trudi Canavan

Lord Rothen had such a difficult time in this series. He was tasked with caring for Sonea, a rouge magician and street kid that really hated the magicians. What I loved was how patient he was with her but also how firm. He understood the fact that she was scared and in unknown territory and so treated her with respect and care, allowing her to make her own decisions, even if they weren't what the magicians would have preferred.

3. Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Fitchner. The most loud mouth, vulgar mentor of the lot and he's quite possibly my favourite. He has a very tough love approach to his students but it works and he has some of the most fantastic lines and scenes within this series. Just read it, you'll see why I adore him.

1. Marked by P.C. Cast

I haven't read this series for ages but I loved reading it. I still have a few books left to read of it...I'll get to them eventually. My favourite teacher was always Lenobia. She wasn't taken seriously by many of the students or other teachers but she saw more than most. Zoey really took a shine to her and it was easy to see why. Lenobia is very calm and collected but can kick ass when required to.
