Legendary* by Stephanie Garber

June 7, 2018

Firstly, a huge thank-you to the lovely girls at Hodder for sending this over. Much love x

I adore this series. I loved Legendary but I think I loved Caraval just that little bit more. Don't get me wrong, both were incredible. It was the magic of being introduced to Caraval for the very first time and experiencing it. The game was still a huge part of Legendary but it focused more so on Tella and her personal growth which I loved. Her interactions with beloved and also new characters were fantastic. She's just so sassy and headstrong but still maintains a very endearing vulnerabilty - the reason for which is revealed in this novel.

Like Caraval this novel kept me guessing throughout, I did manage to guess part of the ending but not all of it.

I really missed Scarlett and Julian but I'm hoping in the final novel we get all four of the characters together...

Spoilers Next!

Now onto the spoiler-y section.

Okay so the lore in this book just took it to a whole new level. I loved the inclusion of the fates and them being linked to a deck of destiny. I got the feeling that was heavily influenced by tarot cards. Specifically, I thought it was great that some of the fates were brought into the story as characters. Jacks, hmm. I could never decide if he was completely evil or not. Some of the things he did were unquestionably awful but he did help. Even if he had an ulterior motive. It was kind of predictable that Tella was his love, his weakness. But that didn't mean I didn't love it.

I'm glad that Stephanie didn't go completely down the absentee parent route in YA. It drives me round the bend when I see that! Most of this book was dedicated to Tella finding out where her mother was and saving her. Which I did really like. It had echoes of the first book but took it to the next level.

Then. UM DANTE. HELLO LEGEND. What in tarnation?!

That is all.

I loved this book.
