House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas

This book was both nothing like I expected and exactly what I expected. Let me explain.

I did not for a second think that this was going to be an urban fantasy, gun-toting, futuristic drug-using, skype conference call type book. I imagined medieval-style fantasy ala Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses. It was nothing of the sort. There were werewolves, vampires, fae, nymphs, every kind of mystical creature. Even mermaids! All of them either gun-wielding or dabbling in new drugs.

It works.

It has the same feel of Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season with all the tech and creatures. So, of course, I loved it.
But in true Sarah J Maas style, there was a cast of characters you can't help but fall in love with. They're all very distinct personalities, all flawed and all very very sassy. I feel she's really honed her craft with this but, not to say that her others aren't a feat of plot and character engineering because they are. House of Earth and Blood is a true demonstration of her skill as an author.

And in this one, she calls out tropes and has fun with them. My favourite one 'alphaholes' - the male that as soon as he claps eyes on you he claims you as his, tries to protect you as though you're a bird stuck in a cage and can't defend yourself. That was something she really demystified with Bryce and Hunt. Their dynamic was fantastic and I can't wait to see it develop further in the next book.

Not only that but every character seemed to have a front that the course of the book broke down and they became the truest (or at least were on the way to becoming) version of themselves.

Certain plot points I had pegged from the beginning and others appeared around the corner and near enough smacked you in the face with a frying pan of surprise. I cried, so much reading this. It's been a while since I stayed up late late to finish a book. I did with this. I was 400 pages in and needed to finish it. Safe to say I nearly saw the sunrise reading this.

It is addicting. Everything you love about Sarah J Maas but with a whole new look to it.

I need the next book.
