I read this book in one sitting and cried when I finished it.
It was utterly wonderful.
The novel follows Elle, a Starfield and fandom obsessed girl who wants nothing more than for her stepmother and stepsister to lay off her. We also meet Daniel, a budding actor who has just been cast in the remake of Starfield...which happens to be one of his favourite shows not that anyone knows it. The two meet as a result of a kind of incorrect number but only talk via text. Can you see the Cinderella vibes?
There are so many things to love about this book. Every character is nuanced and well rounded but they aren't perfect. They all have a bit of imperfection. Elle is feisty and determined which I love but she struggles to let anyone in. Daniel is kind and intelligent but he often cares too much about what other people think. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew all these characters and the side characters. Sage was a joy to read about, she helped Elle get over her fear of letting her walls down. The fact that they both worked on a food truck called the Magic Pumpkin just made me smile.
Geekerella is a love letter to fandom and every facet of it. It champions the good parts but still exposes how toxic it can be. The Starfield fandom brings Elle, Calliope and Sage together as they watch it together eventually. However, they are cruel towards Daniel and his new role trashing him before they've even begun filming.
Be unapologetically you is what I took from this book.
