This took me so so so long to read. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy the book, because I did. You can see how much I loved it by my rating. But I have so many books on my TBR I wanted to read instead...and I still do. I just didn't have the motivation to pick Emma up. At least for the first part of the book. It's roughly 480 pages and is divided into three volumes, the first one and a half didn't really grab me. However, the latter half of the novel had me audibly gasping as certain events were revealed.
I'd describe this novel a little like desperate housewives but in the 19th century. There's a lot of gossiping and social manoeuvring much like that TV show but with a lot more declarations and dances. Many of the characters seemed somewhat exaggerated and often I struggled to figure out who was speaking which is why this isn't a five star rating.
I think part of why I wasn't motivated to pick this up, aside from the TBR mountain, is that not a lot happens in this novel. There's a lot of dancing, walking and talking but I like action. Granted not a lot happened really nicely...I liked the writing style even if it was a little difficult to grasp to begin with. The more I read it though, the easier it became and the quicker I read.
I'm now thrilled to be able to say I've read a Jane Austen novel and I truly loved Emma.
